My intention had been to walk to Stickle Tarn and then go up Jack's Rake to Pavey Ark, but the weather had intervened. From the dam, I walked around the tarn in front of Pavey Ark, before making my way over to the start of North Rake. Starting from Langdale Valley you gain height quickly as you climb to Stickle Tarn, then take a leisurely walk around the tarn to the boulderfields and the entrance to Jack's Rake. The dam was constructed in order to provide a constant year-round supply of water to power the Gunpowder Works down the valley at Elterwater (now the site of Langdale Estates where you can still see some of the giant mill stones used for grinding the gunpowder). The walk is entirely on land owned by the National Trust, and begins and ends at the National Trust Stickle Ghyll parking area off the B5343 in Great Langdale.
